Music Course, October 2012

Music Course October 2012 is well underway-congratulations to those who have already performed and good luck to those about to!
All are working very hard and the half term break is fast approaching-lots of packing going on in Girls’ House this morning.
Sometimes we are fortunate to have visitors from afar come to stay in Girls’ House and participate in school life.
This October, we have welcomed Auguste, 14, a violinist all the way from Lithuania.

Here is what Auguste has to say about her stay here at Chets:
‘There are so many reasons why I like Chets very much.
First, people always smile for you even if the don’t know you.
Second, I met new friends who help me a lot to feel like I’m at home.
Third-there are lots of activities to do in your free time. I like it very much!
I’m really excited to be here for music course in CSO for ten days!
It’s a very big experience for me as a musician and it’s very joyful because in rehearsals we have so much fun.
I’m really glad to be here and I want to come back here again J
Big thanks for everyone, I’m going to go back to Lithuania with the best memories and feelings J
Auguste’

Wishing everyone a lovely, relaxing hal term break when it arrives!

GHCC: Mexican Day of the Dead!

The GHCC with Miss Mercer got spooky on Saturday-but as a more unusual cultural alternative to the approaching Halloween theme, looked to the Mexican Day of the Dead festival for eerie inspiration...complete with bright, kaleidoscopic colours and an abundance of glitter!

At first glance, the Mexican custom of El Día de los Muertos — the Day of the Dead — may sound much like the U.S. custom of Halloween. After all, the celebration traditionally starts at midnight the night of Oct. 31, and the festivities are abundant in images related to death.
But the customs have different origins, and their attitudes toward death are different: In the typical Halloween festivities, death is something to be feared. But in el día de los muertos, death — or at least the memories of those who have died — is something to be celebrated.   El día de los muertos, which continues until Nov. 2, has become one of the biggest holidays in Mexico, and celebrations are becoming more common in areas of the United States with a large Hispanic population. Its origins are distinctly Mexican: During the time of the Aztecs, a monthlong summer celebration was overseen by the goddess Mictecacihuatl, the Lady of the Dead. After the Aztecs were conquered by Spain and Catholicism became the dominant religion, the customs became intertwined with the Christian commemoration of All Saints' Day on Nov. 1.
Specifics of the celebration vary with region, but one of the most common customs is the making of elaborate altars to welcome departed spirits home. Vigils are held, and families often go to cemeteries to fix up the graves of their departed relatives. Festivities also frequently include traditional foods such as pan de muerto (bread of the dead), which can conceal a miniature skeleton.

Saturday Night Craft Club with Miss Mercer

SATURDAY NIGHT CRAFT CLUB WITH MISS MERCER
EVERY SATURDAY
7.30PM
ALL WELCOME!

Saturday night Craft Club has been a highlight for many this term, with sock bunny fever sweeping Girls' House. The results of this have been evident through the appearance of strange but cute creatures around House, attached to school bags, pinned to notice boards etc...
This week, Miss Mercer began a new and exciting project. All are welcome to join her at 7.30pm each Saturday, to create their very own contribution to the Girls’ House patchwork quilt.
The project will run throughout the year and materials are available for girls to take away if they have some spare time outside the Saturday Craft Club session to create their very own piece of Girls’ House, quilted history!

Funerals ring out across Manchester

A sombre mood has swept across the school today as the neighbouring Cathedral hosts the funeral of PC Nicola Hughes, who was killed near Manchester on duty last week.
The sun is shining down on those gathered in Cathedral Gardens to pay their respects and the sound of much beautiful and thoughtful music and hymns is filling the air this lunchtime.
The Chetham’s Choristers are involved in the ceremony today, and again tomorrow, for the funeral of PC Fiona Bone.

Royal Visit Hits the High Notes!

The new building was today officially declared open by HRH The Earl of Wessex, in a celebratory unveiling with the whole school and special guests in attendance.
Mrs Moreland radiated a tremendous sense of achievement on behalf of all those who have been involved with the project and much felt thanks to all those who had contributed and made the whole thing possible.
HRH The Earl of Wessex was a light and refreshing presence, who did a great job of unveiling the plaque, to much applause. His attendance emphasised his commitment to Chets of which he holds the role of Royal Patron.
In November 2010, when he visited Chets, he predicted that:
“The impact of this project will transform an important cultural landmark in the heart of Manchester, help maintain Chetham’s world renowned reputation as a leading specialist music school and, of course, ensure a lasting legacy through its contribution to music education and music-making.”
Today, this sentiment rang true, as the Fanfares sounded joyously and Chets student, Thomas Brown had the honour of closing the ceremony with his own composition. Thunderous percussion reverberated around the Oglesby Atrium and the Brass section relished in their Fanfare role, ending the event with a true sense of occasion.

The Earl of Wessex Visits the Bridgewater Hall

HRH The Earl of Wessex, Patron of Chetham's School of Music, came to hear the end of year concert at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester on Friday 3rd July, 2009.  The Earl met a number of representatives from the school and heard a presentation given by Mr Michael Oglesby, Executive Leader of the School Project, on the progress being made with the new school and the current situation regarding fundraising.  The photograph to the left shows HRH talking with Stephen Threlfall, the Musical Director of the school, and the Lord-Lieutenant.

The School Orchestra and Choir performed Belshazzar's Feast to great applause from the audience.  HRH was escorted by Mr Threlfall to meet some of the pupils.
The photograph to the right show HRH being presented with a large 'Birthday Card' signed by all of the pupils to mark the school's 40th Anniversary.
The evening was a resounding success and for those who left the school that day Prince Edwards visit mad the all the more memorable.
